FAMILIES can try their hand at a variety of Olympic sports at a two-day event in Walthamstow this weekend.
The 'Festival of Sport' takes place in both the grounds of Waltham Forest Town Hall in Forest Road and the nearby Waltham Forest Pool & Track complex in Chingford Road on Saturday and Sunday (August 4 and 5) from 11am until 7pm.
Big screens will broadcast the action from the Olympics while sporting professional and clubs in Waltham Forest will be on hand to let residents try a variety of games including archery, athletics, basketball, tennis, volleyball and boxing.
The festival is part of the council's 'Big 6' events to celebrate the Games.
While all the events are free, some have criticised the programme's £1.5million pricetag, which the council hopes to pay for from its controversial decision to rent out Low Hall Sports Ground in Walthamstow as a campsite during the Olympics.
Meanwhile on Sunday (August 5) the ten metre high artwork Godiva Awakes - a giant puppet driven by bicycles - will travel through the borough and make its appearance at the festival as part of the nationwide Cultural Olympiad.
It sets off from the Ridgeway Park in Chingford at around 1pm, going down Chingford Mount to the Crooked Billet, before travelling along Chingford Road and turning left at the Bell Corner into Forest Road.
Organisers estimate it conclude its journey at the town hall sometime between 3pm and 4pm. Motorists are warned there will be delays in the area as a result.
