A PICTURESQUE pub has taken the coveted crown in an annual flower contest.
The Theydon Oak, in Coopersale Street, has triumphed in this year's Epping in Bloom competition.
Town councillors were impressed by the pub's floral display, which includes an array of hanging baskets and climbing jasmine.
Manager Daniel Bryant, 26, said he was 'stoked' to hear the Grade II-listed pub had won.
"We've entered every year and we always thought we did enough to be the winners," said Mr Bryant.
He said the summer's heavy rainfall had made producing a good display this year particularly challenging.
"The flowers haven't been the best this year because of the weather. They haven't grown as thick as we would have liked.
"But they're definitely a big talking point among our customers," he added.
Assistant manager Jo Lawrence, 41, said the pub had won before, but not for several years.
She added: "We're extremely happy to win. We are one of the oldest pubs and we like to keep it looking traditional."
Staff will receive a rosebowl and certificate.
Town mayor Jon Whitehouse said: "We're very grateful to those pubs which did make the effort to brighten up the town this summer.
"I think it's been difficult for all the pubs this year, but the Theydon Oak had a very attractive and welcoming display."
