NEW technology which could dramatically speed up the diagnosis of heart conditions has been successfully piloted at a South Woodford doctor’s surgery.

Doctor Shabana Ali of the Southdene Surgery in George Lane, South Woodford, has been testing a device which allows her to send ECG readings from her surgery down the phone to cardiologists.

She said: “This really speeds up the process and in some cases could save lives.

“We have diagnosed two patients with abnormal heart rhythms with this device and got them pacemakers very quickly.”

The device is held to the patient’s chest and the results are relayed via phone directly to cardiologists.

It cuts out the need to refer patients on from the surgery and also allows doctors to get results much faster than they have been able to before.

Dr Ali said: “The trial was very successful and we will be keeping the device.

“I expect it to be rolled out across the country at some stage.”
