A VETERAN of the conflict in Iraq who was badly injured just six weeks into his first tour of duty there has had a statue of himself unveiled in Trafalgar Square.
Arron Dindyal, 29, of Copperfield Road, Chigwell, suffered internal injuries from the shockwaves caused by a mortar attack in Basra.
But he finished his tour and only discovered he had fractured his spine, lost the use of most of his digestive system and damaged the cartilage in his knees on his return to the UK.
Since returning from Iraq seven years ago, he has started to walk again, despite being told he was expected to remain in a wheelchair.
He said the sense of determination that he gained while serving in the army that has helped him pull through.
“When you are told things are impossible, you fight to do it anyway,” he said.
A statue of him and other soldiers injured while serving their country were due to be unveiled yesterday, to mark National Heroes’ Day.
