Redbridge let a two-goal lead slip before crashing out of the Essex Senior Cup on penalties against Romford on Tuesday night.

Nana Asamoah and Danny Hayes put the Motormen in the driving seat but Romford came back to take the match to a shoot-out which they won 3-1 to progress to the next round.

The result will allow Redbridge to focus on the league where they recorded only their second win of the season with a 2-1 win at home to Cheshunt last Saturday.

Midfielder Gerry Skerritt was making his 100th appearance for the club and Redbridge looked keen to give him something to celebrate as they moved the ball quickly in the opening stages.

Both sides squandered early chances with Cheshunt’s Tony Burge dragging a shot wide from the edge of the box before Redbridge’s Jacob Cleaver failed to take advantage when put clear at the other end.

The home side took the lead though in bizarre fashion when Joe Bricknell’s corner met the fists of Cheshunt keeper Glenn Williamson who turned the ball into his own net.

The visitors almost equalised though on the stroke of half time when Michael Deane’s speculative shot hit the crossbar but Redbridge were unscathed and took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Cheshunt continued to threaten and looked to have equalised in the 52nd minute when Jason Mason’s cross was headed goalward only to be cleared off the line.

It was Redbridge though who grabbed the next goal in the 70th minute when Glen O’Hanlon beat the Cheshunt keeper to a through ball and duly slotted home to make it 2-0.

Redbridge never looked comfortable in the closing stages and Danny Gudgeon gave Cheshunt hope late on, but the Motormen held out to register their first home victory of the seaoson.

Redbridge next face a trip to Chatham Town on Saturday.

Waltham Forest continued their strong run of form as they thrashed fourth-placed Needham Market 6-1 away from home on Tuesday night.

The result is Forest’s fourth win in four matches, during which they have scored 19 goals and conceded just three.

Captain Adrian Clifton opened the scoring with a long-range effort in the 12th minute before a Rhys Barber own-goal doubled Forest’s lead.

Nathan Clarke pulled one back for Market but five minutes before the break Corey Whitely restored the two-goal advantage to make it 3-1.

A Joel Palmer double made it five before the hour mark and Manu Dagher completed the six-hit with 18 minutes still left to play.

The impressive result made it two wins in two for Forest as they beat Aveley 2-1 at home last Saturday.

Whitely opened the scoring for Forest with a long-range drive after the ball was knocked down by Jack Leachman.

Whitely doubled Forest’s lead in the second half and despite Jay Leader pulling one back for Aveley, Forest held on for the win.

The two victories move Forest into 12th in the table before they travel to Witham Town on Saturday.

Witham Town will be looking to get back to winning ways after they were knocked out of the Essex Senior Cup by Waltham Abbey 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Goals from Cal Got, Billy Jones and James Peagram ensured Abbey’s progress.

The draw for the next round will be made on Friday.

Up next for Abbey is Tilbury at home on Saturday
