Bradley Anderson starred as Waltham Forest Amateur Boxing Club won two of four fights on a spectacular evening of boxing.
The show-piece event attracted some of the country’s top amateur fighters and did not disappoint the sell-out audience of over 300 fight fans.
Held at the Prince Regent Hotel in Chigwell the event helped raise funds for local cricket club Fives and Heronians.
Despite recently breaking his thumb and having little in the way of training, teenager Liam Dillon was first to hit the ring for the home club against Fairbairn’s Haroon Nikia.
Dillon took control of the bout from the first bell with his quick hands putting Nikia on the back foot.
The Fairbairn fighter did well to test Dillon at times during the three round contest, but the Forest puncher secured a unanimous decision from the judges.
Next out for Waltham Forest was senior Chris Farbridge, who was matched against Eltham’s Danny Riordan.
Despite landing some good blows in the opening session, Fairbridge found himself with a bloodied nose, and in the second, the official stepped in to stop the home fighter from recording a much sort after victory.
The third home fighter to step through the ropes was the highly talented Bradley Anderson, who was facing a real test against the giant Jack Casswell form the Smallholdings ABC.
The experienced Anderson got in close from the opening bell and hit his opponent with a flurry of punches, to prevent the lofty south Londoner from finding his range.
Being tested throughout, Anderson didn’t fail to disappoint against a very durable opponent, as he secured not only the verdict from the officials but also did enough to win the ‘best home boxer of the night’ award to boot.
Last out for Forest was Dan Gower against Peacock’s Kieran Donker. In a well matched contest the visiting boxer was able to go up a gear when required to get the nod from the judges, following an excellent three rounds of boxing.
Reflecting on events club secretary Ian Cuddy said: “Given the fact that our own training facilities have been heavily restricted because of refurbishment works, I thought our lads gave an excellent account of themselves.
“Both Liam and Bradley showed their undoubted ability while I also thought Dan and Chris learnt a lot from facing top class opponents.
“It is certainly very encouraging going into our own show at the end of the month. I would just like to thank all the, supporters, boxers and clubs that came down to put on an excellent show to help out another sporting club from our area.”
Waltham Forest’s next set of bouts take place at the Prince Regent Hotel in Chigwell on Friday November 30. Tickets are still available for what promises to be a top night of amateur boxing.
