THE captain's drive-in proved a big anti-climax for John Michael Wade after his exertions blowing a hunting horn and riding a hobby horse dressed up as Robin Hood in a comedy sketch at Woodford Golf Club on Sunday.

Following tradition in using the old wooden-shafted and wooden-headed driver normally resplendent in its honoured place above the clubhouse bar, the newly-elected captain mucked up his drive and the ball trickled only 32 yards down the fairway. But it made John Michael Walker a happy member as he won the sweep for guessing the nearest estimated distance the ball would travel.

Captain Wade together with team-mates Mark Bonham, immediate past captain, club secretary Peter Willett and 2009 captain Mark Deeming, clocked up a respectable score in the ensuing Texas Scramble event, but were well off the mark for prizes.

The winners were Mark Rowley, Martin Cox, Les Curtis and Adrian Trett who scored a superb 56.1 stableford points. Runners-up were Tom Steed, Anthony Weaver, Darrel James and Bill Tyzack on 57 points.

Mike Smith comfortably captured the Division One November medal at Woodford last week returning a stableford score of 38 points. He had a two-point margin over runner-up Mark Rowley with Darrel James a further point adrift in third place.

Phil Gauci left the field stranded in Division Two by clocking up 41 points to clinch first place. But the valiant effort on his part cost him dear as he suffered a two-stroke handicap cut, bring him down to 25 handicap. Second was Kevin Williamson on 36 points and third Ted Purdue on 31 points.
