Wanstead Under-10s enjoyed two wins when they played host to Upper Clapton, Stanford Le Hope and Canvey Island.

Playing against Stanford Le Hope first, Brandon Smith scored five tries as an experimental Wanstead side outplayed their opponents to run out 35-10 winners.

Some neat rucking by Louis Chapman allowed Smith a clear run at the opposition defence to score for the first time.

However, slack defending allowed Stanford back into the match as they grabbed an equalising score. The Herons were jolted back into action and Smith crossed the whitewash twice more.

Wanstead continued to be in command following the break, with Smith adding his fourth and fifth tries either side of scores from Dylan McGovern and Cameron Richards.

Chapman and Sidney Robinson turned out for the opposition and both acquitted themselves well with a try apiece.

Harry Turner starred in the second game as the home team secured a 45-0 win against Upper Clapton.

Turner scored twice as Ryan John and Sam Castle also crossed the line in the one-sided affair.

Wanstead continued to dominate the match as Turner touched down twice more in the second half.

Louis Freeman, Alex Robinson and Sam Castle completed the rout.

In the final match of the day, Canvey Island couldn't raise a full team so Turner and Sam Castle swapped sides as Wanstead fell to a 20-10 defeat.

Turner was again the difference, scoring a hat-trick of tries to complete a fine day's work Smith touched down twice for Wanstead but it was not enough to stop them slipping to defeat.

Meanwhile, the Under-11s entertained Upper Clapton and Stanford at home.

Wanstead had to be loaned two Stanford players in their first match but were quickly into their stride, with a try from the talisman Luc Drew in the 4-1 win.

The young Herons went on to score three more tries, with Niall Duffy adding one of those, while Byron Blackmore once again impressed.

Wanstead continued their winning run against Upper Clapton as Drew and Gabriel Weeden ran in first-half tries.

Upper Clapton could not live with the pace of Duffy and were unable to penetrate the Wanstead defence, which was ably marshalled by young Harry Gibson. Stuart Hodson and Oisin Mulholland had exceptional matches as Wanstead eventually ran out as 5-0 winners.

It was not such a successful afternoon for the Under-9s, who welcomed Upper Clapton, Stanford and Canvey Island.

Up against Stanford first, Wanstead produced a good team effort but it was not enough to stop them going down 3-1.

The Herons faced Upper Clapton next and again fielded a strong starting line-up.

The game was evenly-contested but Wanstead narrowly lost out 5-4.

However, Wanstead avoided a third defeat in their final game against Canvey Island when despite conceding early, they earned a 1-1 draw.

Elsewhere, playing twice against Upper Clapton and once against Stanford, the Under-8s participated in some great touch rugby.

In their first match against Upper Clapton, Jasper McNally-Drew scored a hat-trick of tries but was unable to stop Wanstead losing the match 6-5.

Harry Reed and Jeffrey Rogers also crossed the line for the Herons.

Determined to get some revenge in the second meeting between the teams, Wanstead came out flying and Jamie Moran crossing the whitewash twice.

Poppy Freeman scored her first try for the team, along with Reece Sangha, as the two teams played out a 4-4 draw.

Moran once again starred in the match against Stanford, touching down between the posts three times as Wanstead ran out 5-4 winners.

Joseph Cannole grabbed a try as Sangha got his second of the day and first of the match to round off the scoring.
