This summer’s Olympic spirit will be rekindled in East London when a number of prestigious sporting events are hosted in the area as part of the Gold Event Series.

The series, which benefitted from £27m of National Lottery funding, aims to bring 70 events to the UK over the coming years, including 36 World and European Championships.

Lee Valley Regional Park Authority secured the first major event of any Olympic venue following the Games, with the World Canoe Slalom Championships returning to the White Water Centre in 2015.

The competition could see the likes of gold medal winners Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott in action, as well as local London 2012 heroes such as David Florence, Richard Hounslow and Lizzie Neave.

Two years later, the park will also host the European Hockey Championships, which will take place at the Lea Valley Hockey Centre.

There are currently live bids in place for tennis’ Wheelchair Singles Masters, which if won, would be on show at the Lee Valley Tennis Centre in 2014, and the World Track Cycling Championships, which would take place in 2016 at Lee Valley VeloPark.

Shaun Dawson, chief executive of the Park Authority, said: “The birth of the Gold Event Series echoes our commitment to bring international sports events to the UK as part of the Olympic legacy.

“With three world class London 2012 legacy venues to offer at Lee Valley Regional Park, we look forward to welcoming elite athletes from around the globe over the next decade, inspiring a next generation of world level British sportsmen and women.

“We stand ready to compete for the right to host suitable events in the future.”
