Wanstead crashed out of the Essex League Cup second round on Saturday after they were beaten by 59 runs at the hands of Buckhurst Hill.
Hill got off to an excellent start, with openers Ian Russell (50) and Ed Buxton (27) putting on 76 for the first wicket.
Adam Lord hauled Wanstead back into the game with some splendid bowling that saw him take three wickets for 20.
But Hill were well set and South African batsman Hendro Puchert’s unbeaten 56 as well as Russell Beckett’s quick-fire 27 set a total of 219.
Wanstead’s reply got off to a dreadful start, with Josh Peters claiming the wicket of captain Arfan Akram for four runs before left-arm spinner Mohib Shah ripped through Wanstead with three wickets.
Wanstead’s innings was wrapped up by Rohan Bhome, taking two for 15 as they slumped to 160 all out.
Hill face Wanstead once again on Saturday in their first league game of the season and will play Gidea Park in the third round of the cup.
Essex County League Premier Division
Walthamstow suffered a 96-run defeat against current league champions Barking.
Having won the toss, Barking’s openers put on 58 before Walthamstow’s Deepan Kandepan dismissed skipper Shaan Shafiq for 19 and with the score on 82 for one, Dominic Whitehall-Smith took a great catch off the bowling of Saghir Rabbani to dismiss the other opener for 46.
Tight bowling from Kandepan (two for 22), Rabbani (three for 44) and Prabhakar (one for 33) restricted Barking to 209 all out on a good batting wicket.
Walthamstow, in reply, looked positive, with captain Matt Guest scoring a breezy 21 off 18 deliveries before he was dismissed by Barking’s Imran Butt (two for 15).
From there it went downhill as tight bowling from Gursharran Jattana (two for 23) and Jahir Ahmed (two for 28) helped dismiss Wathamstow for 113.
Dukes League Cup
South Woodford are through to the quarter-finals after beating West Essex by eight wickets.
The visitors elected to bowl and it proved a good decision as Garry Neicho (24 for four) and Harry Shirt (33 for three) helped dismiss West Essex for a mere 72, with Asif Iqbal top-scoring on 32.
It took just 14 overs for South Woodford to reach their target, with Neicho putting on 19, Max Shirt hitting 23 and Ashley Leat left not out on 19.
South Woodford now face Brentwood in the last eight.
Woodford Wells were knocked out of the third round after suffering a nine-wicket defeat away to Hadleigh & Thundersley.
Wells were put into bat first but despite opener Andrew Baars posting 42, the hosts restricted their opponents to a total of 194 thanks to three wickets each for Oliver Wagstaff and Jesse Simpson and two more from David Williams.
Wagstaff was then the main man in Hadleigh’s reply, scoring a brilliant 101 not out to put his side firmly in command.
