Chingford's Mark Rowley heads the list of President’s Cup qualifiers after he managed a score of 65 nett at Woodford Golf Club on Saturday.
Rowley achieved this at a cost of one stroke to his handicap of ten, and the best gross score was achieved by five-handicap golfer Michael Everitt on 75.
The other six golfers along with Rowley will now go onto the competition proper, which is a knock-out under match play rules.
These players are Tom Steed, Stephen Bland, Mitchell O’Brien, Tony Olley, Aiden Steed and club vice-captain Zekia Alsanjak, who all achieved nett scores in the lows 70s.
The draw for the finals on Sunday were made by captain John Michael Wade and the pairings are Bland against Everitt, Alsanjak against O’Brien, Tom Steed against Rowley and Olley against Aiden Steed.
Meanwhile a golf club 90 years younger than the 1890-established Woodford showed the old hands how to play in the Essex Seniors’ Championship second round singles competition.
Ballards Gore Golf Club of Canewdon, near Rochford, won by 8.5 points to 2.5.
A notable Woodford success was by club president Roy Webb, who comfortably defeated R Threadgold eight and seven in the first match out in the event.
Olley was the other Woodford winner, while Rowley managed to finish all square in his match.
Elsewhere, high winds made conditions difficult in the seniors’ May Medal at the Woodford club last week, but Tom Steed and Anthony Weaver overcame them to each notch 34 stableford points.
Steed was declared the winner on a count-back. Weaver also claimed the nearest the pin prize on the 166-yard ninth Sunset hole, while Steed recorded the best front nine score with 18 points.
