The chief executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority has said the organisation is “extremely proud” after the International Hockey Federation (FIH) decided to stage the 2018 Hockey Women’s World Cup at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The announcement was made by the FIH in Lausanne yesterday following England Hockey’s successful bid.
Shaun Dawson said: “We’re extremely proud to be hosting these major international sporting events at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre and I would like to congratulate England Hockey on their successful bids.
“Hosting events of this magnitude will give people the opportunity to relive the London 2012 Games and watch the world’s best compete in an inspirational venue as well as encourage even more people to get involved in hockey.”
When it opens in May 2014, the hockey and tennis centre will host community, club and elite programmes providing opportunities for everyone to get involved with both hockey and tennis and utilise the same premier facilities which will be used by the best players in the world.
The centre is located on the site of Eton Manor, which hosted wheelchair tennis at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
The venue will boast four indoor and six outdoor tennis courts as well as two of the best hockey pitches in the country and will host a range of community, club and elite events.
These are the latest high profile competitions to be confirmed for the venue, which will also host the European Hockey Championships in 2015 and the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
