Port Vale 0
Dagenham and Redbridge 1

(League Two)

JAMIE GUY grabbed his first goal for Dagenham and Redbridge as the team rekindled their faint hopes of a play-off place in League Two with a 1-0 win over Port Vale.

The striker, who has impressed since arriving on loan from Colchester United, made the difference on Tuesday evening, nodding in a 25th minute goal to keep John Still’s men in the hunt for a top seven finish.

After making a strong impression during his first start for the club against Morecambe at the weekend, he carried that good form into the game against Vale, taking the place of Jon Nurse to partner Ben Strevens up front.

And it was he who found space inside the box to head home a pinpoint Matt Ritchie cross.

Louis Dodds hit the woodwork for the hosts but the Daggers managed to reach the break with their lead in tact.

Winger Sam Saunders and midfielder Doug Loft both could have added to the visitors’ advantage after the break.

Saunders pounced on a mistake by the hosts’ keeper Joe Anyon after a Ritchie corner, but he could only lift his close range effort over the bar.

Loan signing Loft almost produced a stunning second but his thunderous effort on 70 minutes was kept out by a smart stop from Anyon.

Kevin Gall then smacked the woodwork again for Vale, but Dagenham managed to hold on for a vital first win in six games.

The Victoria Road side are now six points adrift of seventh-placed Exeter City, having played a game more.
