DAGGERS boss John Still has revealed he will not stand in the way of striking pair Ben Strevens and Paul Benson if they want to leave, after reports linking the pair with moves away from Victoria Road emerged this week.
Dagenham’s front men are thought to be in demand from a raft of League One and Two clubs, following a prolific season that has seen them combine for 34 goals. And they could yet be the subject of much to-ing and fro-ing this summer.
Despite two months out with a knee injury, Benson has managed 16 league goals this term, and is thought to have attracted the likes of League One high-fliers Millwall, Colchester, Brighton and Swindon, according to Sky Sports. His current deal runs out at the end of next season.
Meanwhile, 14-goal striker Strevens, whose contract is up at the end of the current campaign, is allegedly being headhunted by Stockport, Bury, Huddersfield and Exeter.
The 28-year-old has fuelled speculation about his future by refusing to commit to the Daggers until the end of the season. The club have laid a new deal on the table, but the former Barnet hitman has yet to put pen to paper.
The Daggers would be loath to lose two of their prize assets, but manager Still insists the club would not stop the duo if they wanted to move to a bigger club.
“If they get the opportunity to play at a higher level we wouldn’t stand in their way,” he revealed. “We haven’t stopped players from moving on in the past, and we wouldn’t start now.
“As long as they are progressing their careers then we wouldn’t stop them. Of course I’d rather hang on to them, but we’re realistic enough to know that we don’t pay them enough to keep them here.”
The strikers’ agent, Dan Fletcher, did little to quell the growing speculation, insisting it was no surprise that the pair have been attracting plenty of admiring glances.
“They have enjoyed fantastic seasons and I know a lot of clubs are keeping tabs on them as a result of their goalscoring exploits,” he told skysports.com.
Winger Sam Saunders has also stalled over a new deal, sparking rumours that he could be on his way out.
A club source said: “He won’t put pen to paper until the season has finished.
“The same goes for Strevens.”
