DAGGERS BOSS John Still is in a battle for one of his best players.

Striker Paul Benson has been targeted by League One Gillingham.

But it looks like Still is determined to keep Benson or else let him go for only the very highest fee.

He has issued a statement about “inaccurate” speculation, and also has accused Gillingham of trying to unsettle Benson.

Still said: “Mark Stimson rang me a while ago and asked what figure I'd be looking for to sell Paul Benson to Gillingham” said the Daggers boss.

"I replied that Paul is not for sale but if he'd like to make an offer that I believe is a fair price, I'd take it to the Board for them to think about.

“I told Mark that it wasn't worth offering £15,000-20,000 as it would be nowhere near enough.”

Still also revealed fears that figures at Gillingham could be trying to prise Benson away from under his very nose.

He said: “After this the Gillingham Chairman contacted one of our Board members and said that he was told Paul was available for £25,000. This was not true.

“At no time have Gillingham made a serious offer for the services of Paul.

“Paul is very happy here at Dagenham Redbridge FC and all Gillingham are trying to do is unsettle the player.”

So far this summer the talent has drained out of Victoria Road. As yet, like does not seem to have been replaced with like, on paper at least.

Now it looks like the Daggers want to retain Benson, or say goodbye only for a sizeable cash windfall.
