There was no dream result for Dagenham & Redbridge at Championship side Cardiff City in the first round of the Carling Cup.
The Daggers slipped out of the competition following a 3-1 defeat in Wales.
But manager John Still, who will now prepare his troops for Saturday's League Two clash with Torquay United, took much heart from the performance.
"We played very well throughout, but in the second half we were much the better side," he said.
Dagenham found themselves 2-0 down at the break, but new signing Josh Scott came off the bench to score and set up a tight finish.
However, the visitors' hopes were dashed by a third Cardiff goal in injury time.
The Daggers also host Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday.
