LEE VALLEY Lions’ first home game of the season produced an encouraging display as the team saw off league debutants Streatham Bruins, 11-3.

The Bruins were winless heading into the contest, although the Lions’ confidence would have been at a similarly low ebb after a demoralising 20-0 reverse against Sont & Gosport last week.

However, with the complications over player registration all ironed out, Valley could focus all their attentions on what was happening on the ice, rather than off it.

This season sees the arrival of two female squad members, women’s premier league netminder Ruth Cattell and Great Britain captain Angela Taylor.

And it was Taylor who stole the show on her home debut, netting no fewer than five goals in the rout.

Her first and the team’s opener came after nine minutes, with Graham Lewis and Lee Stobie getting the assists.

A minute later the Lions doubled their lead through Latvian Janis Ozolins during a powerplay, but the visitors hit back to halve the deficit soon after.

The second period saw Valley really get into their stride, scoring five goals to put the game out of sight.

Taylor closed the period with an audacious slapshot, and from then on it was little more than a canter for the hosts.

She scored another to take the score to 9-2, and after former Lion Steve Paris scored a consolation, it was fitting that Taylor should have the final say, as she slammed in goal number 11.

Lee Valley’s next home game is against Swindon ENIHL Wildcats on October 10, with face-off at 4.30pm.
