DAGENHAM & Redbridge defender Abu Ogogo is settling in nicely at Victoria Road. Indeed, so comfortable has he become at defending his own lines that he is now foraging forward and posing a threat in the opposing penalty area.
He did just that against Bradford City on Saturday, and he even managed to grab the winning goal with a tidy finish from a tight angle.
The goal ensured the Daggers remain clipping at the heels of current League Two leaders Bournemouth.
And Ogogo was all too happy to help out, having established himself as John Still’s first choice right-back, ahead of Scott Doe, after shrugging off an injury that saw him miss the start of the season.
“I was just buzzing to be out there playing,” said the 19-year-old. “I was happy to score. It was tight and I just wanted to be first in there. Fortunately, I got a good contact on it and it hit the back of the net.
“I’m settling in very well here. I’ve been waiting for my chance and trying to do what I can. But I think that’s it for goals this season.”
He admits the football is ‘different’ to what he was used to during his formative years at Arsenal’s academy, but it is certainly proving effective at this level.
“The football is a bit different, but it’s effective. We’re winning games and I’d rather be doing that playing the way we play than playing pretty football and not winning.”
While Ogogo was impressive in defence, there was no doubt who stole the show against the Bantams.
Paul Benson capped a stunning display with a first-half goal, although he did miss a penalty. His spot-kick was more likely to threaten the travelling fans in Victoria Road’s new stand than Simon Eastwood in goal.
“I’m useless at penalties. I don’t know why I stepped up to take it and needless to say I won’t be taking another one,” said Benson afterwards.
But he was to have the last laugh, his ninth goal of the season putting the Daggers on course for their sixth home win of the campaign.
Next up is a trip to Macclesfield, where a win could see Still’s men claim top spot.
