DAGENHAM & Redbridge sit proudly atop the League Two table after grinding out a 1-0 victory at Accrington Stanley last week. But you would never have suspected it, speaking to Daggers number two Terry Harris.
If any of the players thought they were sitting on cloud nine after Bournemouth's draw at Bradford meant Dagenham leapfrogged them into top spot, then the club's assistant coach has hauled them back down to earth by warning against any complacency this weekend.
By all accounts, it is a massive few days for the Daggers, as they first welcome third-placed Rochdale to Victoria Road on Saturday, before making the trip to Bournemouth next Tuesday.
It doesn't get any bigger than that. And many will see the two games as an acid test for John Still's side, to determine whether they really are at home at such heady heights, or if altitude sickness will start to kick in.
“People are going to say things like that about these next two games but we're not thinking like that,” said Harris. “We have to look at games individually and we'll have to turn up and be positive against Rochdale. If we're not then all that hard work against Accrington goes out the window.”
However, he did reserve some praise for the players, whose performances on the pitch states that they deserve to be in the position they find themselves.
“For a club like us to be top of the league is a fantastic achievement and credit must go to the players,” Harris added. “It's been well documented that we've lost a lot of players. The ones that have come in have done well and adapted to our ways.”
The players Harris is referring to are the likes of Nana Ofori-Twumasi, Adam Miller and Matthew Lockwood, who have all been brought on board on month-long loan spells in the last few weeks to compensate for departures and injuries to other members of the squad.
“Those guys don't know the way we play but in the couple of days that we had them we tried to get across our methods and both did very well,” he said of Ofori-Twumasi and Miller, who both started for the Daggers on Saturday.
It was a see-saw game at the Crown Ground, with both sides enjoying plenty of chances to score. Paul Benson in particular, normally so assured in front of goal, could have helped himself to a hat-trick but he was denied on three separate occasions by goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin and once by the post.
Mark Arber's diving header from a Danny Green corner found the net via a deflection, while the Daggers had makeshift centre-half Scott Doe to thanks for preserving their lead with two goal-line clearances.
The result will give Dagenham plenty of heart heading into this week, and they will know that two more wins will see them put daylight between themselves and the chasing pack.
“Hopefully we'll be sat here this time next week with a bit of breathing space between ourselves and the rest but if we're not it's not even Christmas yet and there's a long way to go,” added a cautious Harris.
