WALTHAM ABBEY were denied the chance to clamber off the foot of the Ryman Premier Division table when their home match against Aveley was postponed on Tuesday.

The Abbotts slipped to 22nd place when they were comfortably seen off by Boreham Wood on Boxing Day, and the team will have been keen to get back on the pitch to make amends, only for the weather to intervene.

Abbey could not have picked a better time to face Wood, as the team had not won a league game in two months.

But that was put right when Bobby Highton played the ball through for Jamie Richards to fire below Joe Taylor in the Abbey goal.

The visitors did hit a post as they threatened to get back into the match, but late substitute Dean Green entered the fray and made an immediate impact to put the game to bed for Boreham Wood.

First, Green finished from close range before he shot across goal to put the gloss on a 3-0 win.

Abbey will have the chance to put things right when they take on Wood once again at their Capershotts home on Saturday.

Elsewhere, in Division One North, Leyton had a third game in succession postponed due to the weather against VCD Athletic on Tuesday, after their Boxing Day fixture with Wingate & Finchley was also called off.

They are due to travel to Finchley on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Waltham Forest were due in action against Thamesmead Town last night, while their festive fixture against Redbridge was postponed. They are due to face the same opposition at home on Saturday.
