CHIGWELL GOLF club has witnessed an incredible event which is as unlikely as winning the lottery four times.

An amateur golfer hit two holes-in-one in the same round during a veterans match at the club, in High Road.

Pensioner Peter Wafford achieved the feat against almost impossible odds of 67 million to one, last Monday.

It happened during a fourball match between Chigwell and Bush Hill Park, of which Peter is a member.

Chigwell club captain Richard Harrison said: “It’s something that will be commerated at the club.

“No one at the club will see it again during their lifetime” he said. “There’s nothing comparable in golf terms”.

Seventy five year-old Peter told Guardian Series Sport that it was not even his best round.

“It was all luck really. You always aim at the green” he said.

“I’m a 13 handicap so I’m a reasonable player and my handicap has been coming down.

“Sometimes the ball hits the green, and sometimes you shank into the woods”

“But I think gobsmacked is the word to describe how I felt” said the man who has played for just six years.

“It’s exhilarating for me, as it was quite a moment. I don’t think I will get one again.

“I didn’t realise just how rare this is”.

He used a seven wood on the 180 yard long, second and fourteenth holes.

Holes-in-one are events which elude some of the biggest names in the sport.

Seve Ballesteros, an ex-world number one and living legend in the game, has never found the cup in a single shot in competition.

Chigwell club captain Richard Harrison has had a plaque made of Peter’s scorecard to hang at the club.

So what has it been like for Peter?

“Expensive! I’ve had to buy so many drinks at Chigwell and then at my own club as well.”
