DAGENHAM & Redbridge goalkeeper Tony Roberts has told how the club went from 'the Dog & Duck' pub team to League One outfit in a matter of a few seasons.
The Daggers prevailed in an epic League Two play-off final against Rotherham at Wembley yesterday, goals from Paul Benson, Danny Green and Jon Nurse securing a 3-2 victory.
Not long ago, Dagenham were travelling to far-flung places like Canvey Island in the Ryman League, but now they can look forward to away days at Charlton, Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton.
Roberts, who starred in the greatest achievement in the club's history on Sunday, admitted such a dramatic transformation was beyond their wildest dreams.
“I'm 40-years-old, we've got to Wembley for the day out and we've got promoted to a new league. I'm well happy,” said Roberts.
“Dagenham & Redbridge, the pub team from Essex, the Dog & Duck, as people have told us we are. There are a lot of teams out there that are envious of the position we're in. We're in League One. We've worked hard this season and we've deserved this day.”
