DAGENHAM & Redbridge skipper Mark Arber insists there can be no player more deserving of scoring a Wembley winner than Jon Nurse, after the forward's heroics fired the club into League One with the decisive third goal in a pulsating 3-2 play-off final win over Rotherham.
Nurse, dubbed Mr Utility by his team-mates, saw his shot deflect off Kevin Ellison and nestle into the net to put the Daggers 3-2 up on Sunday, and it was a lead they would not relinquish.
The 29-year-old was occupying the left wing for Dagenham at Wembley, but he has been asked to fill a number of roles for the team this season, after a number of comings and goings and injuries to key players.
Arber admitted he was delighted for his team-mate. “I'm so pleased for Jon. He's played in every position. We call him Mr Utility. Sometimes you get labelled with utility and it's a bad thing. But he's played right-back, left-back, left midfield, right midfield and up front for this team and to get the winner at Wembley is a testament to him and outlines the spirit we have at this football club,” Arber said after the final whistle had been blown to signal the greatest achievement in the club's short 18-year history.
The Daggers can now look forward to exciting tussles with former Premier League sides Charlton, Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday.
