WEMBLEY hero Danny Green has admitted he almost quit football last year before finally getting his big break with Dagenham & Redbridge.
The winger, pictured, who scored a thunderous second goal on Sunday to put the Daggers 2-1 up, was released by Nottingham Forest after suffering a bad injury and found himself coaching for Chelsea FC in the community.
Green confesses he was ‘really, really depressed’ until Bishop’s Stortford’s manager at the time, Martin Hayes, handed him a lifeline.
“I got released from Nottingham Forest after a year. Then there was nothing, no calls. I went on a coaching course and Martin Hayes was there and he gave me a chance to come through and play for Bishop’s Stortford.
“I picked it up from there. I was really lucky,” said the 21-year-old.
“I was probably going to quit football last year if nothing came up.
“At the end of last season I knew I was signing for Dagenham and I knew I had to buck my ideas up.
“I owe everything to the gaffer here. He’s given me that confidence to go out and play and express myself.
“It’s the best day of my life. I can’t put it into words, really. It means the world and to score and win at Wembley is the best thing ever.”
There will undoubtedly be plenty of calls now. Green is likely to be the subject of a bidding war this summer, but that is the last thing from his mind at present.
“I know I’ve been linked with clubs and people are interested but I haven’t let that affect me at all. I just want to play football in League One, so I’m happy.”
