DAGGERS boss John Still insists the club can compete in League One this season after seeing his team give one of the title favourites Sheffield Wednesday a run for their money at Hillsborough today.
Dagenham were beaten 2-0 thanks to two early goals; one an own goal from Scott Doe, who inadvertently nodded a Giles Coke effort into his own net, and the other a smart finish from Clinton Morrison just moments later.
However, the visitors were more than a match for their illustrious hosts, knocking the ball around with consummate ease without greatly troubling Nicky Weaver.
And that performance prompted Still to state that his players are more than capable of standing toe to toe with any other team in the division.
“I think that maybe we had a 15 minute spell when we weren't as bright as I would like us to be. But once we overcame that, which was a real plus for me because it could have gone the other way and it didn't, we just got stronger,” Still said.
“The pleasing aspect for me was halfway through the first half the crowd were moaning about the home team, and that tells you maybe we were giving them a problem.
“Our plan with how we hoped it would go worked quite well. We finished the game strongly and we started the second half strongly.
“I've said to the players that they've seen the benchmark for the level. I think that we've shown that we can compete at this level.”
