Twelve league matches were played during last week, including two cup finals.
There was a surprise for EMWA and Greengate, who found they were competing for a new trophy. The Stan Hamilton Memorial Cup was introduced to replace the Printers Cup for Senior Division teams. The cup is named after the league’s secretary, Stan Hamilton, who passed away at the end of January this year. The old Printers Cup, presented to the league by Stan in 1986, was presented to his son and grandson, Ian and Charlie Hamilton. The match itself was a tight affair, with Greengate edging the possession, but finding themselves a goal behind. In the final minutes as Greengate pressed for an equaliser, EMWA broke away to make it 2-0 and take the new trophy. Finishing was the difference between the clubs at this final held at Thurrock.
The afternoon final saw Wellstead Wanderers play Renaissance for the Oxted Ford Cup and Wellstead opened up a two-goal lead, before Renaissance hit back to make it 2-1 at half-time. Wellstead extended their lead after the break to 3-1, only to see Renaissance pull back to 3-2. In the very warm conditions, Wellstead found a little extra and scored twice more to secure the cup, although it was tighter than the 5-2 scoreline suggests. This cup was also at Thurrock and competed for by Premier Division clubs.
Woodbridge beat Chadwell Athletic 4-2 in the Premier Division, whilst Colebrook Royals and Warren United shared the spoils in a double-header. The first match finished 1-1 and the second 0-0.
Warren United ‘B’ return to the top of Division One with a 5-2 defeat of Lonsdale, whilst previous leaders Coral drew 2-2 with the other contenders, Newham United. Krona beat Goresbrook 4-1 and Shield Academy were 3-0 winners against Ashton Athletic.
Elm Park Eagles took four points against Bryant Rovers to stay top of Division Two. They beat them 4-0 and drew 2-2 in a double-header. Finally May & Bakers Reserves beat Emerson Oak 2-0.
