Dagenham and Redbridge fell to their first defeat of the League Two season as they lost 2-0 to Football League new-boys AFC Wimbledon.
A first half penalty from Luke Moore sent the Daggers behind before Rashid Yussuff doubled the lead in the second half, sending a 25-yard shot into the Dagenham goal.
John Still made three changes to his side for the visit of Wimbledon. Chris Lewington was back in the Daggers goal having served a suspension while Jake Reed and Oliver Lee also came into the Dagenham side.
Dagenham were quickly into their stride and created a half chance for Sam Williams inside five minutes. The striker was put through with a clever pass above the Dons’ defence but the ball was spinning away from Williams and he could only shoot over.
The home side were looking more dangerous in the opening exchanges and came close through Jon Nurse.
Following nice build-up play in the midfield the ball fell to the forward but his half-volley went wide of Dons’ keeper Seb Brown’s post.
Wimbledon grew into the match and began to exert pressure on the Dagenham goal. The Dons felt they should have been given a penalty when Jack Midson was hauled over in the box but the referee shook his head.
The game had become very open with both sides taking it in turns to attack.
The Daggers fashioned a good chance after Oliver Lee, on loan from West Ham, was fouled just outside the box.
Gavin Tomlin took the resulting free-kick but could only fire over.
After having two penalty appeals turned down, Wimbledon finally were given a spot kick ten minutes before half time.
The ball struck a hand in the Daggers box and a penalty was given. Moore stepped up and comfortably converted the spot kick and Wimbledon took a 1-0 lead which they held on to until half time.
Dagenham began the second half at a quick pace and a Jake Reed header showed the home side’s intent inside two minutes of the restart.
The Daggers were looking the livelier of the two sides but the Dons doubled their lead after the break, and in stunning fashion.
Yussff picked the ball up just inside the Dagenham half and advanced without any challenge before unleashing a shot from 25-yards into Lewington’s top corner.
Dagenham reacted to the goal well and had six corners in succession, but thanks to some good defending Wimbledon held on to their lead.
It was Wimbledon who looked the more likely to add to the scoring. Dons’ skipper Jamie Stuart came close with a header that was cleared off the line before Moore fired over.
Dagenham rarely looked like nicking a late goal, a Phil Walsh header the closest the home side came, and Wimbledon eased their way to a first victory in the Football League.
The Daggers will look to get back to winning ways on Tuesday as they host Swindon Town.
