After linking up with the O’s last week, Tottenham Hotspur stopper David Button says the switch to Brisbane Road is exactly what he needs.
The 22-year-old was brought in by manager Russell Slade to provide competition for Lee Butcher as Orient’s last line of defence while Jamie Jones is out injured and made his first start in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Carlisle United.
Button has already gained a wealth of Football League loan experience, most recently spending much of last season with Plymouth Argyle where, despite impressing, he was unable to prevent their slide into League Two.
The switch back to League One though, is the perfect fit according to the loanee.
Button said: “Obviously I want to help the team out as much as I can.
“I’ll take it game by game, I know Butch [Butcher] wants to get his place back so each game I need to make sure I am doing well enough to keep my place for the next game and hopefully just get a good run of games and keep adding to my league experience really.”
He added: “This is what I need really for my age. I have got the training behind me and now I just need to keep playing games and to keep improving that way.”
The stopper replaced his friend and former Spurs team-mate Butcher on Saturday but says the pair are professional enough to handle competing with each other for one place.
“We were good friends at Spurs so obviously it was hard for both of us for me to come in but the way he has been with me has been great so I have got no qualms and we are still good friends,” said Button.
“I am here to help the team, keep clean sheets, organise the defence and hopefully just bring a bit of command in the box and try and settle the team down a bit.”
Button was beaten twice on his debut but nobody was pointing the finger of blame in his direction.
His first appearance for the O’s saw him save well when called upon but ultimately beaten twice by Carlisle’s Lee Miller, a recent signing from Championship side Middlesbrough.
Speaking after Saturday’s match, Button said: “Up until 1-0 I thought we were in control of the game. We played well but it is just the way it goes sometimes when you are on a bit of a bad run.
“We have just got to pick ourselves up really. I am sure when we turn the corner we will start picking up three points. It wasn’t just the one point we were after today, it was three.
“Obviously the lads are disappointed. Obviously it always happens when you lose football matches but everyone is trying to stay positive.”
Commenting on the goals, he added: “The first one was a free header. The defence have got to be disappointed with that but for the rest of the game they have played really well.
“They didn’t really have too much to do but it is just those key moments where we maybe need to be a little bit more switched on.
“Like I say, it is the way it goes sometimes. When you are losing they get one opportunity and it always seems to go in.
“The second one, obviously it was a decent free-kick, I have tried my best.
“I’m not sure who it was but maybe we could have been a bit more on the front foot with trying to clear it as well but we are going to stay together and keep being positive and I am sure the results will start coming.”
