It was a weekend to remember for many Woodford Green AC with Essex Ladies athletes as they took part in the British Universities Championships at the 2012 Olympic Stadium.
Despite the cold conditions there were nevertheless some good early season performances, including BUCS titles for Kitty Eleyae and Stephanie Gaynor and good marks from Mark Dry, Sam Watts, Tara Bird, Tracey Duncan.
Eleyae's BUCS title came in the long jump where, in the final round, she went over six metres for the first time to record a winning leap of 6.11m.
She had also been in action in the 100m final and finished fifth with a time of 12.35.
Gaynor took the women's 100m hurdles title, crossing the line in 13.73.
Elsewhere, first year senior Sam Watts was one of two winning Woodford athletes in the invitation UKA races, he won over 200m recording 21.16. The other athlete taking top spot was Mark Dry who recorded victory in the hammer with 70.32m.
In the invitation 800m, Tara Bird placed second with 2.03.46, and also finishing runner-up was Tracey Duncan in the 400m hurdles with 59.07.
Others competing in the UKA races were, Richard Alleyne, who came home sixth in the 110m in 14.02. Jess Spark, who finished sixth in the 3000m with a time of 9.11.78, and Jon Cook who claimed seventh in the 800m in 1.50.
Other athletes to make finals of the BUCS events included Peter Kirabo, who came close to his personal best in the triple jump where he placed fifth with 14.57m. Tom Phillips had a rare track outing over 5000m, placing 14th in the final in 15.07.09. While in the 10,000m Angus Holford was 23rd in the 'A' final with 33.54.89.
Also in action was Junior Ejehu, who reached both the 100m and 200m semi-finals, recording times of 10.84 and 22.13.
Both Paul Scanlan and Austin Joseph made the 400m semi-finals, Scanlan recording 49.40 for fifth and Joseph 50.02 for fourth.
Also making a semi-final was Kathrine Foy who crossed the line in 2.17.10 in the 800m and Georgie Lou Sales with 4.49.73 in the 1500.
Elaine O'Neil progressed to the 200m semi but did not start after recording 25.29 secs in her heat.
Sidne Sales recorded 4.56.41 in the heats of the 1500m whilst Kate Stockings recorded 8.39.21 in the 2km steeplechase despite a fall.
