European champion Aaron Cook is requesting the British Olympic Association (BOA) review GB Taekwondo’s decision not to nominate him for selection for the Olympic Games.
Cook will become world number one in next month’s rankings but Walthamstow’s Lutalo Muhammad is the sport’s preferred -80kg candidate, according to BBC Sport.
While Cook has recently been crowned European champion and is set to be named as world number one, Muhammad is ranked 93rd.
The BOA confirmed to BBC Sport that they will meet tomorrow to discuss GB Taekwondo’s athlete nominations.
Cook quit the British programme last year and has since recruited his own coaches and support staff.
He suffered defeat to Muhammad when the 20-year-old claimed German Open gold in March, but Cook avenged the loss with victory in the Dutch Open, one of his nine tour titles in the last year.
A statement on the Professional Sports Group website from founder Jamie Cunningham read: “After two weeks of following the selection process of British Taekwondo, Aaron has been left with no choice but to request that the British Olympic Association reviews the process and the recommendation not to select Aaron.
“We cannot understand why a governing body in Great Britain is recommending an athlete who is not in the Top 90 of his Olympic category over the World Number 1. The media will no doubt debate the reasons behind the selection and whether an objective or subjective decision has been made.
“For the record, both Aaron and Professional Sports Group feel sympathy for Lutalo Mohamed. He should not have been placed in this situation by his governing body. We are interested in the facts and whether a fair and reasonable decision has been made. We thank the BOA for its consideration of this matter. We also urge UK Sport to consider this whole process, given the role of the British tax payer in the funding of taekwondo in this country.”
