Pupils from West Hatch High School put in a ‘master class’ performance to return from the District Athletics Championship with a haul of medals and trophies.

The West Hatch athletes won the overall competition at year seven, nine, and ten level and also claimed the runners-up spot for year eight.

The event, held at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford, saw Ellie Wilkinson and Brooke Davey claim a one-two finish in the year seven girl’s 200m final.

Zenya Button won the year seven girl’s 100m while Caiman Williamson, despite being in the year below, was victorious in the year ten girl’s 100m.

Harry Wagstaff finished first in the boy’s 100m and Sam Barker took first the year eight boy’s 200m.

Cameron Lyttle was victorious by some distance in the year eight boy’s 800m while Ross Stewart crossed the line first in the year nine boy’s 100m with a new personal best. In his first race at 400m, Junior Milla came away with top spot in the year ten boy’s event.

The school also won the year seven, eight and nine relay before adding the girl’s titles in the year eight, nine and ten relays.

The school's Head of PE, Jon Redding, said: "We went along with no great expectations because we have not been able to do as much athletics in lessons and training at Ashtons (Woodford Green) as we normally do in the summer term.

"However we went with full teams in each age group to give us at least a chance.

"As the day went on we had more and more winners and if we didn’t win, we came second or third."

He continued: "The day could not have been more successful and credit is due to the PE staff who have worked as hard as they can this summer, in trying conditions, to get the pupils up to scratch in all events, and also the pupils for the time and effort they have spent on their training and for putting on a master class for all the other schools. It was a great way to end the year."
