Team GB midfielder Harry Martin described competing at London 2012 as “the best thing I have ever done in my life” as the men’s hockey team opened their campaign with a win.
Martin featured heavily as the host nation eased their way to victory in style against Argentina, beating the South Americans 4-1 at the Riverbank Arena yesterday.
At 19, the Old Loughtonians player is the youngest member of the British squad, and while delighted to have played his part in the Argentina match, he stressed he was looking forward to the upcoming games.
He enthused: “It is quite hard to describe. It is the best thing I have ever done in my life.
“It has been an incredible experience so far and I can’t wait to get on with it now.”
Martin was unable to get on the scoreboard himself but a brace from skipper Barry Middleton followed by efforts from Dan Fox and Richard Smith saw Britain claim the win.
And the youngster labelled it a job well done.
“It was pretty special out there with the crowd. We did what we came to do. We got a win, played some pretty attacking hockey, scored some goals and looked good going forward,” he continued.
“As a team I don’t think we could have asked for much more to be honest. We did what we came out to do. We played with a winning mentality and looked to go forward.
“Personally it was great to play. I got on the ball a few times, felt really good out there and I am looking forward to the next couple of games and hopefully I’ll grab some goals.”
