It was a season’s best for Team GB in the women’s Olympic 4x400m relay final tonight but the quartet could only manage a fifth place finish.
The group, including Woodford Green with Essex Ladies’ Shana Cox and Lee McConnell of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers, took the baton round in a time of 3.24.76 but were comfortably outside the top three.
Cox ran the first leg and handed over to McConnell, while Perri Shakes-Drayton was third to go ahead of 400m silver medallist and former Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu.
The top five teams all posted season’s best times but the gold went to the United States in 3.16.87.
Russia claimed a silver medal in 3.20.23 while the bronze medal went to Jamaica (3.20.95).
