Waltham Forest booked their place in the third round of the Isthmian League Cup in style as they thrashed Grays Athletic 3-0 on Tuesday night.
Forest opened the scoring just after the half hour mark with Arian Retkoceri heading home from a corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the break.
James Bunn went close for Grays in the second half but his shot struck the bar before Forest doubled their lead when Corey Whitely rifled home.
Matt Waldon scored the team's third with a stunning 40-yard free-kick to secure a well-deserved victory.
Three days before Forest’s attentions were on the league as they grabbed a late equaliser to draw 2-2 at home to AFC Sudbury.
After a quiet first half-hour, lightening quick winger Whitely opened the scoring for Forest neatly slotting home from the edge of the area having been played in by Joel Palmer.
But soon after Sudbury forward Leon Antoine headed in to make it 1-1 at half time.
Tempers flared at the start of the second period with Forest’s Tom Vickers and Sudbury’s Adam Dalby both shown yellow cards for late challenges while Forest manager Olawale Ojelabi was also warned for his protestations on the side.
Amidst the tension Sudbury took the lead, David Cowley’s deflected shot beating Forest keeper Aaron Omand to make it 2-1.
With ten minutes to go though Forest drew level. Whitely flicked the ball on to substitute Tunde Adewunmi, who held off two defenders allowing Jack Leachman to apply a clinical finish from twenty yards and steal a late point.
Next up for Forest is a trip to Soham Town Rangers on Saturday.
Redbridge join Forest in the third round of the Ryman League Cup after beating Potters Bar Town 1-0 on Tuesday night.
The Motormen played the majority of the second half with ten men but held on to book their place in the next round.
The result was a welcome relief for Redbridge after they conceded a last-minute goal to lose 1-0 to Thamesmead in the Ryman North Division on Saturday.
The visitors looked the brighter of the sides early on with both Newton and Nani Asamoah testing the Mead goalkeeper.
Mead though grew into the game and had opportunities themselves as Rob Carter squandered two decent chances before half time.
Asamoah was lively again for Redbridge at the start of the second period but as the game wore on it was Mead who posed the greater threat.
In the 72nd minute Lewis Tozer thought he had given the hosts the lead but to Redbridge’s relief the referee spotted a foul in the build up.
The visitors looked to be heading towards a point but with just two minutes to go, Mead grabbed a winner.
Ashley Probet sent a corner into the near post and Lea Dawson arrived first to head the ball into the net.
The result was Redbridge’s seventh defeat of the season and leaves them one place off the bottom of the table.
Next up for the Motormen this weekend is Malden & Tiptree at home.
Waltham Abbey played out a goalless draw with Needham on Saturday thanks to a first-half penalty save from new goalkeeper Jake Winchup.
With both sides keen to avoid defeat, the first half was a cagey affair and chances were at a premium.
But five minutes before half-time Abbey’s Matthew Bedford left his leg dangling and the referee pointed to the spot.
Sam Newson stepped up for Needham but was denied by Whinchup who dived left and palmed the ball away.
Abbey could have taken the lead soon after the interval when Jack Daveney was denied by the outstretched foot of the Needham keeper.
Both sides made changes in an attempt to turn the game in their favour but with cutting edge lacking at both ends, the game drifted to a goalless draw.
Abbey’s next match is against Cheshunt at home on Saturday.
