Wanstead Saints moved up to sixth in the Ilford and District Churches Football League Premiership after a 3-1 victory over Ray Park on Saturday.

Ray Park dominated the majority of the first half but couldn’t produce a goal their efforts deserved.

Both teams looked set to go into half time on level terms until Saints’ Ian Grant broke away down the right wing, crossing the ball to Rob Lydiatt who finished neatly, giving Wanstead a 1-0 lead at half time.

Ray Park began the second half with intent and they duly grabbed an equaliser ten minutes in with a deflected shot beating Wanstead goalkeeper Mark Scott.

Both teams tried to seize the initiative but it was the Saints who took a 2-1 lead when Edward O’Neill netted a free kick from 30 yards out.

Ray Park continued to battle and looked like they might draw level on a number of occasions but Scott produced a number of smart saves.

The visitors’ hopes were put to bed when O’Neill put the ball through to Lydiatt who grabbed his second goal to make it 3-1 with the last kick of the game.

Bradley Williams came off the bench to score a hat-trick as Leytonstone dispatched FC Catalan 6-2 in the first round of the South Essex Sunday Football League Cup.

Levi Fletcher scored his third goal in three games to open the scoring for the hosts before Zulqinain Khan doubled Leytonstone’s lead before half time.

After a goalless opening 15 minutes in the second half, Williams was brought on to add an extra threat up front and within minutes he made an impact, finishing off an incisive through ball from Ahmed Faisal to make it 3-0.

Two more goals from Williams made it five and despite Catalan finding the net twice themselves a Saad Waadia penalty late on rounded off the victory.
