Friendships were cast aside and bragging rights decided as Woodford Golf Club’s annual competition between teams selected by the club captain and the club secretary was played out last Saturday.

Secretary Peter Willett’s team emerged victorious over captain Mark Bonham’s side by 11 points to seven to retain the trophy.

The competition’s four-ball better ball format saw winners awarded two points, losers given no points, and halved games meant a point each.

Mark presented bottles of wine to the winning team at a celebration dinner in the Sunset Avenue Clubhouse.

Other events saw the seniors section’s Tinkler Trophy for players with handicaps of less than 19.9 won by Tom Steed, who collected 41 stableford points. Bernard Killick was runner-up with 36 points.

The John Barnes Cup for players with a handicap of 20 or more was awarded to Peter Rogers who garnered 35 points with Hugh Williams second, just one point behind.

In other news, one lucky golfer won free club membership for a year in a Woodford Festival event on Sunday.

Stephen Watson, 51, of Friday Hill, Chingford, returned a score of 42 shots gross at Woodford Golf Club in its free 9-hole Open championship competition.
