Leyton Orient trail leaders Harrogate Town only on goal difference after Charlie Lee, Macauley Bonne and Matt Harrold goals sealed a 3-0 win over Solihull Moors on Tuesday night to move them joint top.
The comprehensive victory means Justin Edinburgh’s side have now collected 19 points from a possible 27 to remain as only one of two unbeaten sides in the National League.
It was little surprise to see the O’s head coach name an unchanged starting XI for the fifth consecutive game, with only one enforced change coming on the bench as Alex Lawless replaced Dale Gorman who is away on international duty with Northern Ireland Under-21s.
Chasing a third straight victory, Orient oozed confidence in a bright and assured start to the game and created several opportunities along the way.
First Josh Koroma fired an effort from 25 yards before Bonne steered wide with a diving header originating from a Joe Widdowson cross.
The visitors carried their greatest threat on the break and O’s keeper Dean Brill had to be alert to tip Danny Wright’s effort away from danger.
Solihull, who themselves have started the season strongly under the guidance of Tim Flowers, were soon thwarted twice by the inspired Brill who palmed away Cory O’Keeffe’s effort and then denied Kyle Storer on the rebound.
In a frenetic opening 45 minutes, Lee should have hit the target from six yards before Adi Yussuf delivered a warning shot of his own when he found the side netting for Solihull.
However it was the O’s who grabbed the initiative in first-half stoppage-time as Lee’s header this time nestled inside the post to hand the hosts the 1-0 lead.
Orient's evening got considerably better 10 minutes after the restart when Moors defender Jamie Reckord collected two yellow cards in quick succession to receive his marching orders.
Determined to make their numerical advantage count, the home side were on the front foot but had to wait until four minutes from the end to make sure of the points.
Myles Judd initiated a rapid counter-attack from a Solihull corner, releasing Koroma who teed up for Bonne to slot home goal number two from close range.
There was still time for a third goal to arrive, too, as substitute Harrold got in on the act to make it 3-0 in injury time after Bonne had been denied by Ryan Boot.
The win moves the O’s above Wrexham and into second in the National League standings as they continued their excellent start to the campaign against dogged Solihull to the delight of Edinburgh.
“It was a tough game against a very good team again,” Edinburgh told the club website. “We’re finding different ways to win games and I thought we got out the traps as quick as we’ve had this season.
“They probably had the best two chances in the first half-hour but we took the lead at a very crucial time, just before the half-time whistle, and I think we took the game on from there.”
