ORIENT boss Geraint Williams was staying firmly grounded after he saw his team swat aside fallen giant Newcastle Utd, in a 6-1 “freak result.”
Orient took the lead in Saturday's warm-up game at Brisbane Road after just fives minute, when Jimmy Smith headed home Sean Thornton's cross.
The host's went on to hit five more goals, with five different scorers.
Joey Barton's first half penalty was the Magpies sole strike on an afternoon where keeper Jamie Jones impressed in goal with a series of fantastic saves to deny Damien Duff and Kevin Nolan.
Afterwards, Williams said: “You could say the amount of chances we created, and the number of saves we had to make, made it a freak result.
"Obviously we're pleased with the performance. We took our chances well and we created chances. It was a good workout for us on a hot day and its a step forwards towards August 8.
“We'll take the positives. We said in the dressing that we got a good result because we stuck together. We're certainly not getting carried away by anything. The lads are level headed.
“Newcastle were a step up for us in the way they took care of the ball and the way we had to defend, especially with their pace up front.
“We're not used to the little ball slipped in behind our line. But the lads worked hard."
Tamika Mkandawire echoed the manager's words.
The highly-rated defender conceded the penalty from which Newcastle scored, when he bundled over striker Obafemi Martins in the area.
“It's a pre-season friendly and it's easy to get carried away, but we'll keep our feet on the ground and wait for the league games to get started. Then we'll just try and take it game by game and see how the season develops.
“We can improve on lots of things, even though we won 6-1. Sometimes, the passing wasn't as crisp as we like, the defensive shape as well.
"But we did well and they didn't cause many problems. We took our chances, whereas last year we struggled for goals. This year, hopefully, things will change."
