Geraint Williams was happy his players stamped their authority quickly at Colchester on Tuesday night.
The U's went into the Carling Cup tie on a high, after they blasted seven goals past Norwich City last weekend.
But speaking after the 2-1 round one away win, Williams said: "It (Colchester's last result) certainly didn't hurt us. The crowd turned up expecting to see another seven perhaps, and their players knew they had produced a great performance.
"My players could have been thinking they would be under pressure if Colchester got an early goal.
"So it was great to score and settle it down. We just wanted to get through."
He added that he was happy to bring his brand of football back to his previous club.
"People at Leyton Orient have asked me what style I play and I say I like to go forward and score goals. We've scored four in two games now, but there's still things we can work at."
