LEYTON ORIENT have welcomed home one of the very best players who ever played for the club.
Tommy Johnston made 190 appearances and scored 123 goals for Orient over the course of two spells, in 1956-58 and then in 1959-61.
Earlier this month, members of his family came all the way from Australia to Orient’s Brisbane Road home to see his ashes interred at the stadium.
Johnston passed away just over a year ago.
The service was presided over by club chaplain and former O’s player Alan Comfort.
Also in attendance were a number of men who had been Johnston’s team-mates.
In a statement, club director David Dodd said: "It's an honour for Leyton Orient that of the various clubs Tommy played for during his long career, Jean and the family have chosen the O's as the final resting place for his ashes.
“Anyone who remembers Tommy or has read the biography 'Tommy Johnston: The Happy Wanderer' will be aware of the great affection that Tommy had for the O's, so it is fantastic for the club that the family should wish to bring his ashes thousands of miles across the world from their New South Wales, Australia, home to be interred at Brisbane Road."
He added: “As son Neil commented, ‘the happy wanderer is returning home'.”
