GERAINT Williams had praise for his team after seeing Orient score three at home for the first time in a year and a half.
Traffic chaos forced the O’s manager to change his route to Brisbane Road for this game, but it was full steam ahead on the pitch.
Ryan Jarvis struck first with a crisp volley after three minutes. Then Sean Thornton found the net from long range midway through the first half.
Jimmy Smith wrapped the game up with a bending shot early in the second half.
“I thought all three goals were top quality. The finish from Jarv (Ryan Jarvis) was superb. Sean's done what Sean can do and put one in the top corner” said Williams afterwards.
“For the first time this season we've won by more than one goal, which made it nice not to be panicing at the end.”
Orient will certainly face sterner tests than Gillingham this season. They have not won away from home.
“It’s ended a good result for us and we move on” said Williams.
He said the display came from positive thinking by the team.
Reflecting on previous poor performances like the Johnstone Paint Trophy (JPT) defeat to League Two Hereford, he mused: “We did get away from being positive.
“We had a lot of possession in some of the games especially in JPT and the Tranmere games, but we weren’t creating chances. We were giving teams too much time to get organised.
“We only want to pass backwards and sideways when there's not a forward pass on. So we just we need to work harder to get the ball forward with quality into the strikers quicker and we've started doing that.”
