SCOTT McGleish breezed past the 200-goal landmark this week, showing he still has a big future at Orient.
The man, who is a part-time school football coach, is helping the O’s to be masters of their fate in the League One promotion race.
The evergreen 37-year-old hit his 17th goal of the season on Tuesday night, to move on to 201 strikes for his marathon career.
Orient bounced back from a damaging streak of four winless games by sinking struggling Plymouth Argyle 2-0 at the Matchroom Stadium.
Now McGleish, who is surely nearing legend status at the club, is eyeing his next target.
“For the season, the target is to get to 20. You just keep setting targets and hopefully we get to them.
“I’m feeling good. I’ve said it a lot that I’m taking each season as it comes, but I feel like I’ve still got another year in me.
“I keep saying it, and I definitely believe that. Hopefully I can prove that and I’ve gone a long way towards doing it.”
He told Guardian Series Sport he was pleased to tot up the double-tonne at Charlton Athletic last Saturday, where his career began.
“It was quite fitting really to reach that target at my first club. It meant a little bit more.
“My first goal was for Orient on loan from Charlton, and this time it was for Orient at Charlton.
“It was really quite fitting, to be fair. At the time I did not know how to celebrate.
“Keith Peacock, who was the reserve team manager when I was there, came on to the pitch at the end of the game, gave us a big hug and told me: ‘You’re a credit mate. Well done, you deserve it.’ “That was nice.”
Only three points separate Orient from Bournemouth in the final play-off place.
McGleish insisted the east London underdogs are firmly in the chase for promotion.
He insisted he wants to be playing for Orient next season.
But that may depend on whether the promotion dream comes true. Championship level is a big step up.
“We have to keep putting the pressure on the teams above us,” said McGleish. “Hopefully our results will be better than theirs come the end of the regular season.
“Our home record’s been good this year and we’ve got to maintain that.
“We’ve got another toughie on Saturday and if we can keep our good home record, we’ve got as good a shout as anyone in that top eight.
“We’re a little bit off the pace at the moment but hopefully we can get that back. We’ve got to maintain that until the end of the season.”
Promotion-chasing Southampton are the visitors this Saturday.
The Saints will surely pose a stern test of Orient’s credentials than the Pilgrims did on Tuesday.
McGleish headed the hosts in front on four minutes.
Dean Cox was the architect with a deep cross into the box from the left flank.
Then on 13 minutes, Cox coolly slotted home under keeper David Button to cap a break-away attack sparked by McGleish’s pass.
