The O’s signed off the season with a victory over already relegated Rochdale as Russell Slade was able for the first time this campaign to introduce youth to the team, including a starting debut for goalscorer Moses Odubajo.
This was a luxury after last Saturday’s nail-biting League One status survival test which was duly achieved thanks to defeats for Wycombe and co. Saturday was better. The O’s recorded only their second home win in 2012 as the Dale went down 2-1 at the Brisbane.
It was Orient who dominated the first half and we might have opened our account early when Syam Ben Youssef had a shot cleared off the line. The opening goal came after 32 minutes when our favourite little man Dean Cox ran onto a downward header from Kevin Lisbie and delivered a powerful strike from 20 yards. The ball hit Dale defender Stephen Darby and bounced down and over his keeper Matty Edwards.
Four minutes later, Odubajo marked his first league start with a wonder goal. He cut inside two defenders and unleashed an unstoppable drive from 25 yards. The visitors improved after the break when Rochdale introduced winger Nicky Adams who has been transfer listed this week. He played for the O’s on loan and impressed me and a few others. One for Russell to keep in mind maybe?
But it was Reece Gray who gave his side hope when he waltzed past a couple of Orient defenders before sliding the ball home from ten yards.
The O’s responded and finished the stronger, with Cox having a couple of late shots turned away, leaving the bottom of the table visitors to reflect on their dismal run of 14 away games without a win.
For us, I hope Russell will be looking to strengthen the side in all departments. Following the introduction of youth to the side and now with some first team experience, let’s hope after the summer break they come back as men.
Keep the faith.
Up the O’s.
