Harry Kane scored the winning goal for England Under-19s last night as they advanced to the semi finals of the European Championship with a 2-1 victory over France in Estonia.

The Spurs youngster struck six minutes before the break to add to John Lundstram’s earlier effort to see the Young Lions advance to play Greece in Tallinn on Thursday.

England’s opener came somewhat against the run of play but was just reward for a swift and well-executed move.

Sam Johnstone saved well from Kevin Mayi before rolling the ball out and allowing Noel Blake’s side to advance, with Everton’s Lundstram finding the bottom corner of the net.

England were now in the ascendency and went close to doubling their advantage through George Thorne, Kane and Saido Berahino.

Axel N’Gando wasted a glorious chance to level for the French minutes later but they found an equaliser just after the half-hour, as Jerome Phojo found Jordan Veretout to fire home.

But former Leyton Orient loanee Kane restored the advantage shortly before the break, volleying in from 12 yards after French keeper Jonathan Millieras had only punched a corner clear.

England were the brighter just after the break but France continued to chase the game and came desperately close to an equaliser late on.

Blake’s side were able to clear the ball off the line though, ensuring their passage to Thursday’s semi final.

Speaking after the match, Kane told the The FA’s official website: “I thought the boys dug-in and played really well. France had won both of their previous games so it was always going to be hard.

“We had a lot of good chances and unfortunately we didn’t take them all, but we took two and they only got one, so we got the result and that’s the most important thing.”
