Former Orient captain Matthew Spring might have secured a deal with League Two side Wycombe Wanderers last week but the midfielder stressed he enjoyed his time in E10.

The 32-year-old was out of contract with the O’s at the end of last season and was joined by defensive duo Dean Leacock and Syam Ben Youssef in not initially being offered a new deal but also not being released.

Spring was handed the chance to reunite with Chairboys boss Gary Waddock, who he played alongside at Luton Town, and put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal with the Buckinghamshire side.

The former Watford and Leeds United man skippered Orient following the departure of fellow midfielder Stephen Dawson to Barnsley in January, but spoke fondly of his time at Brisbane Road despite his departure.

“It was good to sign eventually somewhere. I had a few things going on so I knew there were a few teams looking at me. I was quietly confident I would get something,” he explained.

“I had a good time at Orient. I enjoyed my time there. I won’t say anything bad about the club as I enjoyed my time there. It is part and parcel of football.”

He added: “When I joined the club (Orient), I hadn’t played much for Charlton and I played I think it was 90 per cent of the games during my time there. I think I did quite well in my time at the club.”

Spring was a model of consistency throughout his last season with the O’s. In a campaign that saw Russell Slade’s squad blighted by injuries, he started 45 games and netted five goals, including the winner against eventual champions Charlton Athletic on New Year’s Eve.

He was also on the scoreboard in some style when he netted against his new team-mates and struck a goal of the season contender in the home defeat to Huddersfield Town.

His arrival at Wycombe saw him confirmed as one of a quintet of new signings for the club who have recently been the subject of a takeover.

With that in mind, Spring believes he has joined a side on the up.

“There’s a bit of an atmosphere about the place,” he explained.

“Around the training ground, it is probably League One or even Championship standard.”

He continued: “From what I have seen so far the club looks to be looking in the right direction.

“Their play at times didn’t really match them going down. They conceded too many goals so that was the problem.”

And as for an immediate return to League One, he added: “That is the aim. I haven’t come here to just see my career out. Hopefully we can do well.”
