Leyton Orient crashed to a 2-0 defeat at Oldham after conceding twice in the last 13 minutes of the game.

Orient were second best for much of the game but looked to be holding out for a point until Matt Derbyshire netted in the 77th minute.

Oldham sealed the three points shortly afterwards when the impressive Jose Baxter exquisitely curled the ball into the net to seal a deserved win for Paul Dickov's side.

The O's made one change to the side which played so well in their midweek win over Hartlepool United. Anthony Griffith came into midfield with Dean Cox dropping down to the bench.

Goalkeeper Jamie Jones was fit to return as a replacement following his shoulder injury but there was no place for Lee Cook who was left back in London with a minor niggle.

Oldham created the first opportunity of the match through Baxter's volley but Ryan Allsop was alert enough to palm the strike away.

Baxter again came close after 13 minutes but the striker's header somehow bounced over the crossbar.

Orient forced their first effort on goal after 20 minutes with Martin Rowland's dipping volley comfortably held by Dean Bouzanis.

The Latics had another opportunity on the half hour mark when the ball was laid off to Lee Croft but he failed to find his range and blasted wide of Allsop's post.

Oldham spurned another chance to take the lead from a corner when Jean Yves M'Voto headed the ball wide of the target.

It was another warning for the O's though as Dickov's side continued to look the more dangerous team.

Orient were probably fairly happy to go in all square at half-time considering the hosts had created most of the decent chances in the opening 45 minutes.

The first effort of the second half came from the Latics but Robbie Simpson lashed his strike well over the visiting crossbar.

Orient created an opening from Jimmy Smith's cross but Moses Odubajo was unable to get a clean contact on the ball and it went out of play.

Gary Sawyer had a spectacular volley from outside the area but the defender's strike flew over the bar.

Russell Slade's side almost nicked the opener after 62 minutes when Rowlands curled in a free-kick but it crept just past the post.

But the hosts went down the other end and M'Voto was just inches away from heading them in front.

The O's had another scare when M'Voto got a touch on a corner but the ball was somehow scrambled into the relieved arms of Allsop.

Slade made his first substitution as he introduced Cox in place of teenager Odubajo midway through the half.

Orient made their second change shortly afterwards with Michael Symes replacing the relatively isolated Ryan Brunt. The Latics came close through captain James Wesolowski but his shot was turned around the post by Allsop.

However Oldham grabbed a deserved lead in the 77th minute from the corner as Derbyshire managed to get a touch from close-range to steer the ball into the net.

The home side killed off the contest late on when the excellent Baxter curled the ball into the corner of the net.
