Waltham Abbey 2
Arlesey 0
(Ryman One North) WALTHAM Abbey extended their run of good form with an impressive win over Arlesey Town - their first home win since August.
The result took their run to three wins and a draw in the last four games.
And confidence was high from the off as Abbots turned in arguably their best performance of the season.
David Ayres had come within a whisker of a post with a fierce drive before Calvin Petrie opened the scoring on 14 minutes with his first goal for the club.
The striker latched onto a loose pass, rounded Town keeper Jake Whincup and slotted home from a tight angle.
Whincup was in action agains soon after, tipping over efforts from both Richard Veares and James Elmes.
At the other end, Abbots midfielder Marc Sontag headed off the line to prevent Ross Edwards drawing level.
Before the half ended, Whincup again did well to deny Elmes and Danny Webb from extending Abbots lead.
But the visiting stopper was helpless to stop Abbots wrapping it up in the 71st minute - a John Sapsford free kick ending with Elmes tapping home following a goalmouth scramble.
Sapsford himself had the ball in the net ten minutes from the end, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Meanwhile, Abbots clash with Witham at Capershotts last night was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch - next up is Northwood away on Saturday.
Abbey: Hickman, Veares, Bostock, Attard, Mensah, M Sontag (Sheehan 79), Elmes, Ayres, Petrie (Sapsford 62), Collins, Webb.
