ATHLETICS

JEANETTE Kwakye won silver in the 60m at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, smashing the British record in the process.

The Woodford Green Athletic Club with Essex Ladies athlete equalled Bev Kinch's 22-year old record of 7.13secs in her semi-final, but reduced that by the relatively large margin of 0.05secs as she ran 7.08secs behind the winner, USA's Angela Williams.

Speaking after the race, Kwakye said: "I'm absolutely ecstatic. I've got my mum, brother and sister here, I can't put it into words.

"I can't complain about getting silver. To be in that calibre of race, where the top three are all running under 7.10 it's brilliant."

Meanwhile, Sarah Claxton was in action over 60m hurdles and came within 1/1000th of a second of making her first major championship final.

Claxton clocked a season's best of 8.07secs in her semi final to finish in a dead heat for fourth place with Antonova of Russia, who was given the nod for the eighth place in the final line up.

Two of Woodford's Higher Competition athletes were also in action.

Simeon Williamson finished seventh in the final of the men's 60m, clocking 6.63secs. He had qualified by running 6.69secs in his heat and 6.63secs in his semi-final.

Damien Moss failed to qualify from a tough and tactical 800m heat, in which he clocked 1min 51.39secs.
