BOXING
ONGAR-based boxers Chris Smith and Luke Coppin agonisingly came up just short in finals against tough opposition.
Teenager Smith faced last year's European champion Joe Costello in the national U46kg final of the Royal Navy Golden Gloves final in Yorkshire on Sunday.
The Newham puncher put in a solid display but saw the points decision go 6-1 in favour of his opponent.
Coach Joe Chapman said: "I thought the bout was a lot closer than the result suggests."
Meanwhile club-mate Coppin was in action in the NABC finals up in Nottingham against southpaw opponent P Cawley, who secured a 10-4 victory.
Chapman said: "Luke boxed very well, but his opponent used his unorthodox style very well on the day to secure the result.
"I'm sure they will continue to work hard in the gym this season and I'm sure they will be ready to push on for a real shot at the NABCs and junior ABCs next year."
