Romford 44
Harlow 16
(Essex Cup Round One)
HARLOW were left to wonder what might have been as they allowed Romford to overhaul a three-point lead and canter into the next round of the Essex Cup, despite a stunning first-half display.
Despite having a number of players missing for the clash, the Rams managed to establish the lead after impressing in the opening exchanges.
James McFerran gladly slotted over a penalty to give the visitors an early advantage after the team had made early inroads into their hosts’ backline.
After missing a second attempt, McFerran was on target once again to double Harlow’s lead, but they were soon pegged back as Romford ran in two unconverted tries.
Unperturbed, the local side continued to press and they gained their reward through substitute Robert Cochrane, who after replacing the injured Mark Bowering, charged through under the posts to haul Harlow back in the game.
McFerran added the extras before sending over a superb 45-yard penalty to give his side the lead heading into half-time.
But things took a turn for the worse as two quick Romford tries took the wind out of the Rams’ sails.
The hosts’ backs then ran in three more scores and Harlow were left to contemplate an early cup exit.
